Client brief

My reason for creating a blog is to return to my roots as a writer and to hone my craft. I don't pretend to write for any particular audience. I am a generalist; I choose to not be cornered into some topical niche. One week I might decide to write an expository essay on the state of chicken farming; the next I might just settle for some narrative riffs on a trip to the ballpark. Recipe for a name: Begin with a pair of plain words (of no more than fourteen letters total) of Anglo-Saxon origin; for example, I prefer "first" over "initial," "many" over "numerous," "do" over "implement." Add a full cup of reliability, cut with a generous portion of fun, bake until you smell a hint of the craft of writing. Humor to taste. If your result is anything like RottenTomatoes, you're sure to please. Thanks! By the way, I didn't forget to include keywords: I just can't think of even one anymore for a natural and memorable name. Edit: Please note that under "Examples of names you like," I've noted those that I thought of right away for their originality in conveying the content and purpose of their respective websites. I do not include them to be textually copied in any part. Edit 2: To help everyone along, I've settled on one keyword, which I use in the description/summary: Riffs. If included (and it doesn't have to be), preferably it'd be the second word in the compound. Most us are familiar with "riffs" in music, but the word certainly can be applied to written language. Alone, the word evokes notes of a musical sort--e.g., guitar riffs--but when you read my original sentence, you knew I was talking about jotting something down, even within the narrow context of "narrative riffs." Such context is desireable--but not necessary--in a name.

Naming tips for One Nonfiction Writer's Blog

Keep it pronounceable

A good business name should be easy to say out loud and spell from memory. If you have to spell it out every time you say it, it will slow down word-of-mouth growth.

.com still beats clever TLDs

Despite hundreds of new extensions, .com remains the most trusted TLD for professional brands. Customers default to typing .com - pick a .com name whenever possible.

Avoid trademark traps

Before you register, run a quick trademark search to make sure the name is clear in your industry. Similar names in the same category can lead to costly disputes later.

Test it in a sentence

Say "I work at [name]" or "Check us out at [name].com" out loud. The name should sound natural, confident, and memorable in everyday conversation.
