Client brief

A classy name is needed for an new online art gallery. The name must be classy, catchy, easy to understand, preferably 2 syllables and no more than 10 letters. It must appeal strongly to young professionals. No hyphens or numbers. The name should be 'telephone proof' (Person on the other side needs to understand and be able to spell the name when mentioned through the telephone) The gallery will sell some modern art of famous Dutch painters but also quality art from less known European artists. The target audience is young professionals (20's/30's), people who are comfortable buying products on the internet. The niche is modern/abstract art. The domains (.com, .nl .be and .de must be available. The name must not be protected under trademark/copyright laws. We are looking for a name that represents the positive feeling a piece of art can give you, or a word that is associated to the mentality of our future customers. We want to evoke emotions and/or the mentality of our target audience. We would like to ask you to think with us in this direction. This means we also will accept great-sounding fantasy names or a great-sounding fictitious person's name (that can be pronounced by people from all over the world) if this is helpful for you (also in relation to the URL). If a fantasy name creates an association with us to our brand values, the emotions we want to evoke and/or the mentality of our target audience, we would consider this as a very serious option. An example of this would be the name Benetton (the clothing brand), which can be interpreted as “beautiful colours”. You don't necessarily have to know what it means; your subconscious tells you the proposition of the brand works with the name. For associations for our concept, please refer to our description.

Naming tips for Online art gallery

Keep it pronounceable

A good business name should be easy to say out loud and spell from memory. If you have to spell it out every time you say it, it will slow down word-of-mouth growth.

.com still beats clever TLDs

Despite hundreds of new extensions, .com remains the most trusted TLD for professional brands. Customers default to typing .com - pick a .com name whenever possible.

Avoid trademark traps

Before you register, run a quick trademark search to make sure the name is clear in your industry. Similar names in the same category can lead to costly disputes later.

Test it in a sentence

Say "I work at [name]" or "Check us out at [name].com" out loud. The name should sound natural, confident, and memorable in everyday conversation.
