Client brief

A long-running, smaller video game conference in the eastern United States is going to re-invent itself to be a conference that includes the music, television and film industries, and provides interactive and immersive art to breathtakingly enrapture and inspire attendees. The conference will continue to be a place to exhibit, or for attendees to learn, listen, participate in roundtables and workshops, or to network.

Historically, the conference is a three-day event taking place in the middle of the week, toward the beginning of the year. Now it will it take place toward the end of the year, right before the leaves change along the east coast of the United States. The color changing of the leaves is quite beautiful when it occurs in late October and early November.

The conference has historically had prominent keynote speakers like John Romero, Mike Laidlaw, and Warren Spector. Over 3 days, attendees can visit various booths of video game developers, publishers, tools and software companies in the video game industry, and colleges. Throughout the day, there are numerous simultaneous sessions; talks and roundtables, by mostly locals in the industry.

There are parties and dinner and lunches available to attendees and VIPs that pay extra for passes. By and large, the conference is mostly the same for those three days. This new conference hopes to drastically change that. This new conference will be for anybody doing business in a digital multimedia arts industry, whether it is for entertainment purposes or not.

Conference names that we like: South by Southwest, Collision, Slush

Conference names that we pitched, but decided against:

Manifest - Multimedia Arts Networking and Inspiration Festival

MELD - Multimedia Entertainment Learning and Development

Rules:

Name should not mention a specific region.

If the type of the event has to be in the name, it is a Conference (not a Convention, Expo, Summit or Festival.)

It doesn't prioritize one industry or limit to a specific industry.

Can be an acronym, apropnym, initialism or portmanteau. Ideally it is original, unique or a play on words.

Doesn't sound too clinical, sterile or overly descriptive.

Tips for choosing a great business name

Keep it pronounceable

A good business name should be easy to say out loud and spell from memory. If you have to spell it out every time you say it, it will slow down word-of-mouth growth.

.com still beats clever TLDs

Despite hundreds of new extensions, .com remains the most trusted TLD for professional brands. Customers default to typing .com - pick a .com name whenever possible.

Avoid trademark traps

Before you register, run a quick trademark search to make sure the name is clear in your industry. Similar names in the same category can lead to costly disputes later.

Test it in a sentence

Say "I work at [name]" or "Check us out at [name].com" out loud. The name should sound natural, confident, and memorable in everyday conversation.
