Client brief

I'm creating a new conference in Canada (English), that hopes to attract both Canadian developers from across the country, as well as American developers situated in the North-East. The focus of the conference will be mostly (but not exclusively) on best practices, quality, and excellence in building custom software solutions. The goal of the conference is to educate attendees, enhancing their skills and enabling them to create better-quality apps for their clients, and provide an opportunity for people to hang out together.

I'd like the name to be professional, but not too lofty. The focus is on becoming more educated and more professional developers by learning from one another, rather than on cutting-edge techniques. The easiest thing would be to incorporate the "TO" abbreviation for Toronto, but it doesn't have to. People will refer to it as the "XYZ" conference in Toronto.

Naming tips for Filemaker Conference

Keep it pronounceable

A good business name should be easy to say out loud and spell from memory. If you have to spell it out every time you say it, it will slow down word-of-mouth growth.

.com still beats clever TLDs

Despite hundreds of new extensions, .com remains the most trusted TLD for professional brands. Customers default to typing .com - pick a .com name whenever possible.

Avoid trademark traps

Before you register, run a quick trademark search to make sure the name is clear in your industry. Similar names in the same category can lead to costly disputes later.

Test it in a sentence

Say "I work at [name]" or "Check us out at [name].com" out loud. The name should sound natural, confident, and memorable in everyday conversation.
