Client brief
Our company was recently acquired and we need to develop a new name and identity. Our INTERIM name is CW Professional Services. Consider this a placeholder and we do not want a name anything like this.
Who we sell to – Larger Fortune 1000 companies. Usually people who are leading marketing or IT departments. Mix of conservative and more progressive mindsets.
What we do – We make technology that connects people to companies, to each other and the world around them. We are involved in new developing emerging technologies – such as mobile, cloud, Big Data analytics, and The Internet of Things. For instance, we are a big player in making all the technology that enables the “Connected Car”. One of the largest research firms calls what we do "The Nexus of Forces" (see this article if you are interested in reading more http://www.xtium.com/blog/gartner-nexus-of-forces-represents-future-of-technology-800830778/)
How we do it – We enable our customers to do more through technology. We unlock their potential through technology. We don’t just focus on the technical, but want to make sure we connect the technology to our customer’s goals and objectives. We have a team of over 1,000 people who consult, design and develop software.
Our personality – We are “professional” but progressive. Not trendy. Not Silicon Valley.
Companies we compete against: Cognizant, IBM, Accenture, Wipro, Infosys, CA
Some tips for naming:
- Not too techy sounding (examples: Infosys, Symantech)
- But, not too “hip” – we are not a Silicon Valley start-up.
- Don’t use overused tech company words, like cloud, mobile, optimize, tech, etc.

Tips for choosing a great business name
Keep it pronounceable
A good business name should be easy to say out loud and spell from memory. If you have to spell it out every time you say it, it will slow down word-of-mouth growth.
.com still beats clever TLDs
Despite hundreds of new extensions, .com remains the most trusted TLD for professional brands. Customers default to typing .com - pick a .com name whenever possible.
Avoid trademark traps
Before you register, run a quick trademark search to make sure the name is clear in your industry. Similar names in the same category can lead to costly disputes later.
Test it in a sentence
Say "I work at [name]" or "Check us out at [name].com" out loud. The name should sound natural, confident, and memorable in everyday conversation.
